So naturally, I went to the garage and selected some type. I decided to go with a large wood capital san serif. I like how imperfect and unique each print comes out with these large surface letters. It amplifies the handmade charm of every card.

Malia, one of the founders and editor of Something Navy, an adorable wedding inspiration blog, asked me if I would create an updated logo for her blog. Of course, I love these sorts of projects and was delighted to accept. Here’s a peek at the current look of the blog:

(PS Click the image to visit Something Navy)

She let me know that they like the simplicity of the page but wanted to steer clear of the cliche navy-esque things. They’re looking for something simple and chic. And, although they like the style of the current font used in the logo, Malia was curious to see what it would be like in a different one.

Since I consider my own style pretty minimal and I’m always striving for elegance, I’m quite convinced we’ll find a great new look for Something Navy.

So without further ado, here are a few of the first draft designs:

I started off using the current font and just tweaking some of the elements of the logo to add an updated feel. (#1) Then I worked on a few samples using a hand drawn ribbon banner and a few different fonts as well as their current one. (#2) For the next logo, I incorporated the anchor to dot the “i” and keep a very simple font for a clean and classic feel. (#3) And finally, because I’m a little obsessed with the charm and imperfection in handwritten scripts right now, I redid the logo in a unique cursive and drew an anchor to compliment the feel of the font.

If you’re interested in having me work on a design project with you, I’d love to do it! Drop me a line: jenica[at]jenicasparks.com

Poor Jason. Then I let him have only a small sample and whisked them off to the baby shower.

Next, Tina came over. And we set a brilliant plot in motion resulting in this 2-day project:

(More on that later.)

Then I reorganized my bathroom and didn’t think to take photos.

And that pretty much leads us up to today which was spent addressing envelopes, visiting the doctor (all is progressing smoothly), eating lunch with my wonderful hubby, and attempting to make some blankets with mom-in-law.

A tinsy bit more on the blankets: I was picking up some copy paper at Walmart and noticed a flock of grandmas hording around the material bins in the fabric section. Turns out the flannel is $2.50 a yard this week and next. That’s just about 1/2 price. So I picked out a couple yards. And how could I pass up the cows jumping over the moon print when I have so many wonderful memories of grandpa singing about such cows and dishes running away with forks.

So, I’ve made a pair of booklets to create a fun way to get these women to dish out some advice . I love the idea of including these in the baby’s memory book and having little tid-bits signed by the women who make up part of baby girl’s family tree. They’ll be a treasure. While workin’ on the custom version for my baby, I also created a few generic samples to include in the shop. I’m going to be offering these ready made versions as well as the option to customize your own. So, if you happen to have a little baby shower coming up, be sure to consider including these in the party! They make a great ice breaker and a modern twist on a guest book. Visit the BLUSH & BEAU shop by clicking here or on the images.

When I get asked about my photography or design work, people usually want to know where to go to get the details. And if you’re familiar with the current site, you know that would leave me in a pickle. And I end up being all fuddily-duddily about things and say, “Oh yes. I have a site. Well. Sorta. I mean. There is a site. It’s just. Well. There are suppose to be working links on it, but…there…isn’t…right now.” Lame. I should be utterly ashamed to have ever spuddled anything close to that to any potential client ever. But I have, and now I’m trying to fix it to make sure that never happens again!

Step 1: Create some business cards ushering people to www.jenicasparks.com. CHECK! (see post below)
Step 2: Create a working Web site that actually links to something useful. Almost CHECK! (visit www.jenicasparks.com)
Step 3: Update Blog template to add some cohesion to it all. (This is not so much a top priority as it is a cross my fingers hope to have it happen sort of thing. Sooo we’ll see some updates over time.)
Step 4: Use business cards the next time I get asked about my work and feel super proud that I’m sending someone to a legit portfolio.

A snap shot of the homepage design plan :

Snazzy, eh?

Like I said, I’m about mid-way through the site, and I promise I’m not stopping there. I hope to have every link working by the end of Saturday, and then adding more portfolio pieces over time. It’s something I’ve really been needing to do, and after making business cards I said to myself that this whole site thing needs to happen now otherwise we’re gonna have a baby all up in here and things will be too crazy to ever mark it off my to-do list.

I totally assumed it was squash. I mean, it looks like a giant yellow squash. Jason hates squash. When we got home he said, “What are we going to do with this? Let’s just get rid of it.” Of course I was appalled and said something ridiculous like, “What are we going to do with it?! We’re going to eat it. Food doesn’t just grow on trees!” You know what I meant. So today, when I was looking for a good squash recipe and attempting to determine whether this thing really was an overgrown summer squash or spaghetti squash or something…I settled on a well reviewed baked spaghetti squash recipe, turned on the oven and sliced the thing right down the middle. Something was not right. First of all it was way to easy to cut. The inside wasn’t as squash-like as I anticipated — Not that I’ve had much experience with squash. And! What was that? A faint scent of…honeydew? I took my spoon and scooped into the side of the thing and had my first bite of, yes, honeydew disguised as squash. “Really?” I thought to myself, “If raw squash tastes like honeydew then why on earth would anyone ever bake it?” After having Jason taste it, we determined it definitely wasn’t squash. And to think I was about to bake it with garlic and olive oil. Good surprise, huh! When we thought we were bringing home one of our least favorite vegetables, we were actually bringing home one of our favorite fruits. Yellow honeydew. Google it. I promise it’s legit.
